Transforming My Fitness: The Impact of Barry’s 30-Day ‘Find Your Strength’ Challenge

As an enthusiastic marathon runner, I’ve discovered that long-distance runners and sprinters demonstrate distinct characteristics in their training and mindset. Running a marathon demands preparation for a grueling 26.2-mile journey, often involving 16 to 20 weeks of longer, slower runs. In contrast, sprinters focus primarily on cultivating their ability to sustain high velocities over shorter distances.

Over the past three-and-a-half years, my fitness journey has revolved around tackling all six of the Abbott Marathon World Majors. Having achieved this ambitious goal, I’m now eager to expand my repertoire of workouts as I shift my focus to new fitness challenges.

During my marathon training, I found a compelling complement in Barry’s Bootcamp. Its unique blend of cardio and strength training through high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has not only elevated my performance but has also kept my routine fresh and engaging. Each standard 50-minute class typically divides time between heavy weight lifting on the floor and varied running paces on the treadmill, integrating recovery walk breaks aimed at optimizing heart rate control and ultimately enhancing calorie burn. These intervals are instrumental in building speed over time.

For those who may not identify as runners, Barry’s offers diverse alternatives, including lift-only sessions and a cycle-lift class that replaces the treadmill with stationary bikes. Regardless of your fitness preference, each class contributes toward broader fitness challenges, making them inclusive for all participants.

The Journey to Speed

This spring, I set my sights on improving my half marathon times. This endeavor coincided with my training for three half marathons I had registered for in March. The first was the Disney Half Marathon on March 1, a light-hearted event filled with whimsical photo opportunities. On a more competitive note, I also signed up for the LA Half Marathon with CORE Response, where I previously achieved my half marathon personal record (PR), followed by the leg of an Ironman Triathlon in Oceanside at the end of the month.

To elevate my speed, I committed to a 30-day Barry’s challenge, which entailed 12 classes within 30 days while incorporating weekly long runs ranging between eight and 11 miles to ensure I’m half marathon ready. Given my timeline and the upcoming Walt Disney World Princess Half Marathon, I had to complete the challenge in just 21 days to qualify for exciting prizes like gift cards and stylish water bottles. This commitment fueled my determination to train rigorously, providing the chance to see how it would affect my race performance.

Measuring Progress

Throughout the challenge, I meticulously documented my performance. Consistency was key, as I opted to wear the same pair of Brooks Glycerin GTS23 shoes for all workouts. While incorporating a few lift classes, I primarily focused on traditional sessions, using them to hone my speed. Barry’s trainers bring unique perspectives to every workout, emphasizing different body parts throughout the week. This variance allowed me to approach training as a multifaceted experience rather than a linear progression.

Each class introduced fresh challenges, such as tackling significant inclines or focusing on upper body strength, allowing my training to remain dynamic. I aimed for no more than three classes weekly while integrating other workouts into my routine. On my initial class day, my top sprint speed was 8.5 mph while lifting a 15-pound weight set. By the final session, I comfortably lifted between 20 to 25 pounds and ramped my sprint to a solid 10 mph.

One of the most significant outcomes from my training was my newfound ability to conquer hills with greater ease, a result of my concentrated efforts on leg workouts. By the culmination of the challenge, I could sustain running at a 6-8 incline for extended periods, despite previously struggling even at a 4 incline.

Experiencing Challenges

To meet my goal, I needed to adapt to treadmill running more than I typically prefer, which led to some leg fatigue, particularly affecting my quads and knees. The motivation to push through muscle soreness tested my resolve, but I remained committed to my training regimen. This experience reinforced the essence of athletic dedication and discipline.

Even though my primary objective was to determine if diversifying my training would enhance my strength and speed, the real assessment came during my races. Participating in Disney runs, known for their vibrancy rather than speed, meant enjoying the journey rather than pursuing a fast time. I found joy in connecting with fellow runners who were similarly using the event as a training run for upcoming marathons. Despite indulging in countless character photo ops and pre-race excitement, I noticed a remarkable recovery rate post-race, likely thanks to my weightlifting focus, which enhanced my overall stamina.

Following my Disney experience, I ran the LA Charity Half Marathon. Unfortunately, soaring temperatures transformed my ambition of achieving a personal record into a more modest goal of simply completing the race upright. Despite battling heat conditions and physical challenges, I was pleased to finish, as my rigorous training had equipped me to bounce back better than in previous races.

Camaraderie in Fitness

What resonates most with me about Barry’s Bootcamp is its blend of self-motivation within a communal environment. Instructors often emphasize that recommended speeds are just that—recommendations. Each participant is encouraged to set their own pace, creating an inclusive atmosphere where personal achievement is celebrated. Class interactions foster a sense of community and mutual encouragement, exemplified by instructors who frequently spotlight individual efforts.

The presence of fellow attendees, whether running faster or slower, ignites competition and inspires personal growth, motivating us to push our boundaries. Daily progress tracking through the app adds an extra layer of accountability, spurring me to stay engaged as I witnessed others surpass their goals.

While the tangible rewards from the challenge are yet to be determined, the intangibles—both physical and mental resilience—I gained are invaluable. Completing this chapter has not only enriched my fitness journey but has strengthened my resolve moving into the future.
